Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democratic candidate for governor, penned a letter earlier this month asking Gov. Phil Murphy (D) to end the bear hunt.

“The bear hunt began as an initiative to manage aggressive bear incidents, but the extermination of the bears is cruel, inhumane, and unnecessary,” Fulop wrote in a letter to Murphy on December 5th that he shared on X yesterday.
“These hunts have shown themselves to be nothing but a grotesque public spectacle, as these creatures suffer due to the violence inflicted upon them. It does not represent a viable long-term solution.”
He continued that “no scientific date” shows that hunting lessens the encounters people have with bears and that other non-lethal methods exist.
“The safety of residents and bears alike are of foremost importance, and there are other means to reduce bear- human interaction. Again, I ask that you discontinue this outdated measure and it is my hope that your Administration delivers on its promise and finally puts an end to the bear hunt,” Fulop added.
31 legislators have asked Murphy to put a stop to the bear hunt this year, according to the League of Humane Voters of New Jersey.
That includes Hudson County legislators such as state Senator Raj Mukherji, Assemblyman John Allen, Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez (all D-32), Assemblyman Will Sampson, Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato (D-31), state Senator Brian Stack, and Assemblyman Gabriel Rodriguez (both D-33).
On December 16th, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife said there would be no extension of the bear hunt this season.
It has been 17 days since Commissioner Bill O’Dea’s article on the largest case of ticket fixing in US history was published. Fire code and building code have not been enforced in 5 years, there is a housing state of emergency exacerbated by deliberate understaffing in housing services and corruption in 2 courts, yet Steven Fulop has visibly done and said NOTHING. Now he has time to write about bears, which he knows zero about how to control a bear or other wild animal population, and that is not a relevant issue to Jersey City where he is mayor. Fulop continues to disregard and block constituents. Stop printing his propaganda and start printing truth please.
We have fires breaking out on a regular basis all over the city and understaffed fire departments.
