Hudson County Administrator Abe Antun explained that Essex County “is forming a cooperative for the secure medical unit,” which means that Essex, Hudson, Passaic, Union, Gloucester and Monmouth Counties would potentially be part of a medical lockdown unit at a hospital that can provide inmates medical care that is not trauma related.

In order for Hudson County to get involved in the bidding process, the freeholders would have to approve joining the cooperative.

Jersey City Freeholder Bill O’Dea (D-2) pointed out that Hudson County has a contract with the East Orange General Hospital that has terms similar to the cooperative, but Antun pointed out measures need to undertaken for when the contract expires.

As expected, O’Dea wanted to know more particulars on the matter.
