“It is with great sorrow that I tell you we lost a amazing man from Guttenberg. Councilman Al Caso was an incredible person,” Mayor Wayne Zitt wrote on his Facebook page this morning.

“Al was always looking to move Guttenberg forward. He will be greatly missed. No more suffering Al, we love you. R.I.P”

A Guttenberg resident since 1993, Caso was first elected to the council in 2008 and retired on December 31st of last year due to his declining health.

Former Councilwoman Donna Florio also retired on the same day to move to Florida to spend more time with family.

Zitt had previously called the duo of Caso and Florio the “backbone of the council.”

They were replaced on the council by William Hokien, a former board of education president, and Juana Malave.
