“Ravi Bhalla and Katie Brennan are true champions for New Jersey. Thanks to their deep community ties and history of frontline advocacy, they are clear-eyed about the challenges facing our state and the structural solutions needed to address them,” New Jersey State Director at Food & Water Action Matt Smith said in a statement.
“For far too long, New Jersey’s political establishment has made it all but impossible for independent, grassroots candidates to break into state politics. As a result, our policies have lagged far behind peer states, while machine politicians remain beholden to corporate interests and unaccountable to voters … June’s primary election is our first chance to begin breaking that status quo, and we’re thrilled to throw our support behind these two candidates in their effort to help New Jersey finally turn the page.”
Bhalla and Brennan are running in a field of six in a firefight of a June 10th primary that has eyes on it from across the Garden State.
Food & Water Watch further explained that they supported Bhalla since he helped Hoboken become the first municipality in New Jersey to sue the fossil fuel industry and has spearheaded an array of climate and clean energy initiatives, adding that Brennan is a longtime environmental and affordable housing advocate in Jersey City.
Furthermore, both have committed to passing the NJ Climate Superfund Act and fighting the controversial $11 billion NJ Turnpike expansion project in Hudson County if elected, among other environmentally conscious initiatives.
They are facing off with Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez (D-32) and Jersey City Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh, as part of Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s gubernatorial ticket, as well as Jennie Pu and Crystal Fonseca – who have the support of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO).
