East Newark three-alarm fire torches DPW building, displaces four families

A three-alarm fire in East Newark spread to the borough’s Department of Public Works garage, causing serious damage Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, also displacing four families.

The blaze broke out at 246 Grant Ave. at about 10 p.m. Tuesday evening, spreading to the DPW garage at 250 Grant Ave., officials said.

In the above video, YouTube user homer218 posted an 11-minute clip of the East Newark Fire Department battling the fire.

The department ruled the blaze under control at around 3 a.m. and four families were displaced as a result of the  catastrophe, authorities said.

Mutual aid on the scene came from the North Arlington, Lyndhurst and Jersey City Fire Departments, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the DPW garage is likely destroyed beyond immediate repair.
