The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Jersey City Police Department and the Hoboken Police Department, will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs from 10:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29th until Saturday, December 30th at 3:30 a.m.

They will be conducting a DWI checkpoint in the area of Paterson Plank Road and Hope Street on the Jersey City/Hoboken border. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

“The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping the traveling public safe, which is why the primary purpose of this checkpoint is not to make arrests but to deter drivers from driving impaired,” Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said in a statement.

“Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also interfere with someone’s ability to safely operate a vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office will also have extra patrols throughout the county in an effort to curb driving while intoxicated while also taking part in the Hudson County Vision Zero Task Force in order to make all of our roadways safer.”

Schillari added that extra patrols will be on the road throughout the county to crackdown on drunk driving, while also taking part in the Hudson County Vision Zero Task Force.

He also asked to take mass transit, taxi, car service, have a designated driver, or spend the night at a friend’s house to avoid driving impaired, as well as to contact law enforcement if someone is spotted driving erratically.

Following a triple fatal crash on Paterson Plank Road in October, there were DWI checkpoints in the area over Halloween and Thanksgiving weekends.

  1. Paterson Plank Road has been unsafe for decades and the County and Union City have done nothing to fix the core structural problems.
For its part Hoboken’s many bars and soon multiple cannabis stores has made it the center of intoxication because it brings in cash.
