Iyahna Dumeus, 21, of Newark, and Aaliyah McNeill, 20, of Jersey City, were each charged with possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia, Amato said in a statement.

They were taken into custody at about 10:55 p.m. from the area of 51st Street and Avenue C. Officers in the area observed a vehicle committing traffic violations and conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area of 51st Street and Avenue C.

During the investigation, McNeill was identified as the driver and Dumeus as the passenger. As officers attempted to collect McNeill’s driving credentials, they observed narcotic paraphernalia strewn about the interior of the vehicle.

The investigation led to the recovery of narcotic paraphernalia and a partially loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

Both occupants were charged with the weapons possession after neither claimed ownership of it, authorities said.
