Retired West New York Police Lt. Henry Codina, who was named the assistant public safety director in July, was appointed the new public safety director last night with Alejandro DeRojas retiring at the end of 2024.

“Tonight , Mayor Albio Sires along with the Board Of Commissioners swore in Henry Codina as our Director of Public Safety. We are extremely proud to have Director Codina as our new leader !” the West New York Police Department wrote on social media last night.
Also a board of education trustee, Codina was a 28-year veteran of the police department who is earning a $78,974.04 annual pension, which was approved by the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System board in April.
While his salary information was not immediately available, DeRojas, who assumed the role of public safety director in September 2023, earned $200,000 annually, as HCV first reported.
Additionally, the commissioners did not vote on a new assistant public safety director last night to succeed Codina.
On the volunteer school board, his term runs through April 2026 and he currently serves as the chair of the Health and Student Safety, Facilities Committee, as well as the committee for Grounds, Athletics, and Extracurricular Activities.

Director Codina is highly professional, and treats others with dignity and respect. He is also a great Patron and Friend of the Museum of the West New York Public Library, having donated a baseball cap from Hudson County’s best ever high school baseball team, the 1988 Memorial High School County, State, and National Champions that he was a member of as a player, a team and coach-autographed baseball, as well as an antique milk bottle from a vintage WNY dairy. His service on our Town Board of Education is also a living testament to his leadership by example.

Stop spreading lies, “Oswaldo Oriente” It was a vigilant Mayor Sires who requested assistance from the Hudson County Prosecutor in the corruption you refer to, that only came to the public’s light after Chief Oriente resigned following an FBI Investigation. Mayor Sires was blameless in all of this. If you know what you say is untrue, yet you say it with intent to harm, YOU should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
