Around 5:22 p.m. last night, Bayonne firefighters responded to a report of fire at 13 Colonial Drive in the Country Village section of Bayonne, Fire Chief Keith Weaver said.

Arriving units found smoke and fire coming from the first floor kitchen area of the two-family home. Firefighters used two hand lines to extinguish a gas-fed fire near the stove.

The blaze was declared under control at 5:45 p.m. and no injuries were reported. Fire officials are conducting an investigation into the cause, however, it does not seem suspicious in nature, Weaver indicated.

The Bayonne Building Department and PSE&G responded to the incident and one displaced occupant is staying with a relative.

“The quick response and actions of our firefighters led to the quick extinguishment and containment of this fire to the kitchen area of the first floor apartment,” Weaver explained.
