UPDATED: Authorities investigating fatal shooting on Ocean Avenue in Jersey City

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting on Ocean Avenue in Jersey City, the third shooting being probed since Tuesday.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting on Ocean Avenue between Bidwell and Bayview Avenues involving one male victim. More info to follow,” the law enforcement agency tweeted.

At 7:37 p.m. this evening, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released a statement providing more details.

Today, shortly after 3:15 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Ocean Avenue between Bidwell and Bayview Avenues in Jersey City, the prosecutor said.

Responding officers found the victim, a 21-year-old Jersey City man, later identified as Akim Ward, with gunshot wound(s) to the upper body. The victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 3:31 p.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this case and no arrests have been made at this time.

On Tuesday, a 25-year-old was fatally shot near the intersection of Cator and Rose Avenues, which was followed by the death of a 17-year-old teen who died after being shot in the leg.
