After conceding speakership, Prieto thanks supporters in Atlantic City

While state Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (D-32) was not able to secure a third term as speaker, that didn’t stop him from hosting a packed event at the League of Municipalities to thank his supporters.

At least 250 people converged on the Seven Star Lounge earlier this evening to recognize Prieto for serving his two terms as the number three elected leader in the state.

While Prieto had been bullish for months on going head-to-head with Assemblyman Craig Coughlin (D-19), he endorsed his potential political opponent on Thursday and Coughlin formally became Prieto’s successor on Monday.

Coughlin was cordial, making a quick appearance and shaking hands with the Hudson Dem before heading on his way.

Things could be worse for the former competitive bodybuilder and martial artist since Prieto appears poised to lead the state’s Sports and Exposition Authority in 2018 (h/t Insider NJ).

However, in the event that the now ex-speaker leaves the Assembly early (he was just re-elected last Tuesday), politicos said to the pump the brakes on a potential replacement: a successor hasn’t been tapped yet.

Others who attended the soiree included state Senator/North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco (D-32), Assembly members Angela McKnight, Nick Chiaravalloti (both D-31), Angelica Jimenez (D-32), Annette Chaparro, Raj Mukherji (both D-33) and Valerie Vainieri-Huttle (D-37), Guttenberg Mayor-elect Wayne Zitt, Hoboken Mayor-elect Ravi Bhalla, Hoboken 2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, North Bergen Commissioner Julio Marenco, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, West New York Mayor Felix Roque, West New York Commissioners Cosmo Cirillo and Sue Colacurcio, former U.S. Senator Bob “Torch” Toricelli, ex-West New York Mayor Sal Vega, former Union City Mayor/Assemblyman Rudy Garcia, among many others.
