In a letter to the editor, Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman, says that if elected mayor, she “will stand up to federal overreach” in light of the U.S. Department of Justice suing Jersey City for their sanctuary city status.

Dear Editor,
In the same week the federal government sued Jersey City for its sanctuary city policies, House Republicans voted to enact the largest cuts to Medicaid and Medicare in our nation’s history.
These actions are not isolated—they represent a broader assault on the values and well-being of Jersey City residents.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit challenges our city’s efforts to protect immigrant families and build trust between local law enforcement and the community.
At the same time, the House’s budget bill threatens to strip healthcare from thousands of our neighbors.
Medicaid and Medicare cuts could force seniors to choose between medicine and groceries, and leave working families without access to basic care.
For Jersey City, where so many depend on these programs, the consequences would be devastating: increased hardship, poorer health outcomes, and greater inequality.
Abraham Lincoln’s words echo today: “A nation at war with itself shall not stand.”
When the federal government targets our city for upholding compassion and then slashes the lifelines that keep our most vulnerable afloat, it is clear we are being forced to fight battles on multiple fronts. This is not governance—it is division.
That is why I am running for Mayor of Jersey City. We need leadership that will defend our values, protect our residents, and fight for our fair share.
As Mayor, I will stand up to federal overreach, work to safeguard healthcare access, and ensure our city remains a beacon of inclusion and resilience.
Together, we can build a city that stands united, not divided—a city that proves, even in the face of adversity, we will not be broken.
Joyce Watterman
President, Jersey City Municipal Council
Candidate for Mayor of Jersey City

Like a group of slaveholders refusing to surrender their slaves after Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation” more like it.
I didnt even see Ms. Watterman in Greenville improving the neighborhood. Maybe her focus should be on improving Jersey City, after all, we are voting for Mayor, not for President.
Ok. How?
NJ Democratic Party politicos need to be clear that they have a real plan …Trump Derangement Syndrome is not enough.
Why do they need a plan? They’ve been undermining and trampling on US law and its citizens for years.
