At approximately 3:30 p.m., the North Bergen Police Department was notified of a collision at the intersection of Tonnelle Avenue and 85th Street, Suarez said in a statement.

Responding officers located three vehicles, a Ford SUV, a Hyundai sedan, and a Volkswagen sedan, that were involved in a collision.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 73-year-old North Bergen woman, and passenger, a 90-year-old North Bergen man, were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

During the preliminary investigation, it was determined the driver of the Ford – later identified as Steven Reyes, 45, of Fairview – was traveling north on Tonnelle Avenue and struck the Volkswagen that was traveling south before colliding with the Hyundai.

Reyes was arrested by the North Bergen Police Department and charged with driving while intoxicated.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the North Bergen PD are actively investigating this matter.
