On Friday, September 19th, at approximately 6:27 a.m., the Englewood Police Department responded to Englewood Hospital after an individual arrived at the facility with an apparent gunshot wound, Musella said in a statement.
Responding officers located Joel Gavis, 40, of Jersey City, who was seeking treatment for a gunshot injury to his leg.
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit were also notified and responded to the hospital, initiating a joint investigation with the Englewood Police Department.
The investigation revealed that Galvis sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg and then drove himself to Englewood Hospital.
During a court-authorized search of his vehicle, which was located nearby, investigators recovered two firearms and a high-capacity ammunition magazine. In addition, detectives determined that the serial number of one of the firearms was defaced.
AS a result of the investigation, Galvis was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm, certain persons not to possess a firearm, possession of a defaced firearm, and possession of a large capacity magazine.
He was treated for his injury, released from the hospital into police custody, and remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
Musella also thanked the Englewood Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
These charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Englewood Police Department, under the direction of Chief Thomas Greeley.
