“Chief Bartos began his career as a Bayonne Police Officer in 1983. He then began his firefighting career in the Bayonne Fire Department in 1985. Chief Bartos had his final ‘Walk Out’ today in front of a huge crowd which included city officials, fire officials from around the state, fellow firefighters, family and friends,” the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management wrote on Facebook.

“The Bartos family has a long history of service to Bayonne. Chief Bartos’ dad served in the Bayonne Fire Department for 30 years, his brother Cpt (Ret) Bob Bartos served over 36 years, and he has two nephews currently in the Department. Combined, the Bartos Family has well over 100 years of service to our community. Chief Bartos will be remembered for his vast knowledge, leadership, dedication, and friendship!”

Bartos was also given a ceremonial ride into retirement on a fire pumper truck from the
1940s, according to city spokesman Joe Ryan.

The Bayonne City Council unanimously approved (5-0) amended employment agreements with Fire Chief Keith Weaver and Bartos in August 2024 to meet new state regulations, as HCV first reported.
