Shortly before 6:00 a.m., the Jersey City Fire Department was notified of a fire at 274 Monticello Avenue in Jersey City. Upon arrival, emergency responders observed heavy smoke in the first floor hallway and fire in the basement, Suarez said in a statement.

While conducting fire suppression activities, emergency responders found a 70-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man with injuries from the fire. They were transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center.

They were subsequently transported to Jacobi Medical Center in New York City for additional treatment. Both victims are in stable condition.

The fire originated in the basement and is not considered suspicious at this time. 33 residents were displaced as a result of the fire and one firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at Jersey City Medical Center.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department.
