The Town of West New York has unveiled a new $35 million recreation and middle school plan, a private-public partnership that comes with 400 parking spaces.

“The recreation center will be a valuable location for many of our programs. In the last year, we have doubled the recreation activities offered to all ages. And this center will provide the needed space for our growing recreational needs,” Mayor Albio Sires said in a statement.

“At $35 million, this will be the largest public-private partnership in West New York’s history, and no additional taxpayer dollars will be used. During our campaign, we told residents that West New York could have a new school and a recreation center with plenty of new parking. And we will now have both.”

The proposed facility would be located next to Miller Stadium and Miller Park and would result in 6.2 acres of space dedicated to recreation in the center of town, officials said.

The recreation center will include amenities such as an indoor competitive pool, a multi-purpose court (stripped for basketball and volleyball), an indoor soccer field, pickleball courts, and much more.

The two new parking garages will replace the current flat-surfaced lots at 58th Street & Madison Street and 66th Street & Park Avenue.

As part of the plan, new housing in these designated areas will have parking allocated for future residents separate from the designated public parking.

The plan will be paid for with federal, state, private, and already allocated municipal funds, and therefore, the proposal does not require any additional taxpayer funds, Sires added.

  1. still waiting on the new library, police headquarters, waterfront overpass, waterfront pier park and new school. keep on promising. the town is a disaster, and nothing has changed. taxes going up and quality of life going down. the albio and turner gang continue to use west new york as their cash cow while the residents have nada to show for it. people get the government they deserve.

  2. What about the kids park next to the basketball court in 64th and Boulevard East, the kids are playing and smelling weed all the time because of the grownups smoking weed around the basketball court. Also the amount of people smoking weed in Boulevard East is insane. There should be areas designated to people to smoke their weed and not near children’s park. Also, the dogs’ park is disgusting as well as the streets with the amount of dogs poop not being picked up by their owners. People should get fines if they don’t pick up their pets poop. What about the streets and parks without any lights in Boulevard East. Is dangerous to walk in the evening with the lights not working.
