“My father told me many years ago that I should NEVER assume to know how anyone feels unless I’ve lived in their skin. In going through life, I have always tried to keep that in the forefront of my mind,” Davis said in a statement.

“Because of this manta, I can never and will never say that I know how the family of George Floyd feels or how the African American community feels … I do know this: that the killing of George Floyd should have never happened.”

Davis further stated that he felt “anger and confusion” upon seeing the video where Floyd died, expressing surprise over the “little compassion for another human being” on display from then-Minnesota Police Officer Derek Chauvin.

Nevertheless, the mayor said he still has a lot of faith in the Peninsula City to be resilient during these trying times.

“I am confident that our city will be the example of compassion and brotherhood for which other cities strive. Let’s all say a prayer for the soul of George Floyd and his family. And let’s also pray for our community to remain unified and strong.”
