“We unequivocally condemn the recently announced changes to the PATH weekend schedule from JSQ-33rd, as well as the significant disruptions for countless commuters caused by the recent breakdown. We DEMAND answers, transparency, and implementation of long-promised improvements to weekend and off-peak service,” the duo said in a statement.
“Passengers must be informed and prepared at least five months ahead of service changes. Further, fully funding NJ TRANSIT is essential to enhance service reliability and transit infrastructure beyond PATH. The ill-advised Turnpike expansion project should be cancelled, and those billions reallocated to NJT.”
They also continued that they want to increase transparency around PATH issues, including by adding a rider advocate to push for commuters needs.
On Wednesday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that on Sunday, June 15th at 9:15 a.m. through the end of January 2026, “will implement weekend-only service adjustments on the Journal Square (JSQ) to 33 St via Hoboken (HOB) line to accommodate critical rail replacement and track stabilization work.”
This means that New Jersey-bound weekend service on the 33rd Street-Journal Square via Hoboken line will make an additional stop at Exchange Place, which will result in an additional 7 minutes for trips toward Grove St and Journal Square.
Service frequency between trains will remain at 20 minutes.
The issue comes to the head just days before the June 10th primary, where Fonseca and Pu, who are backed by the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), have to face off with two other slates.
Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla is running with Katie Brennan (they addressed the PATH service cuts yesterday), while Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez and Jersey City Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh are running on Mayor Steven Fulop’s gubernatorial slate.
