Prosecutor: Jersey City man, 71, charged with hit-and-run that killed man, 85

A 71-year-old Jersey City man has been charged with an October hit-and-run that killed an 85-year-old man, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Mohammad Ali, 71, of Jersey City, is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in death and endangering an injured victim, Suarez said in a statement.

He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and released pending his first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 13th.

On Friday, October 20th, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck in the area of Fairview Avenue and Monticello Avenue.

Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Mumtaz Chaudhry, 85, of Jersey City – in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Summit Avenue and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
