UPDATED: Police seeking help identifying driver in fatal hit-and-run in Hoboken

The Hoboken Police Department and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s help in identifying a driver who fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run in Hoboken this morning.

“At approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning, a pedestrian was fatally struck at Willow Avenue and 6th Street in Hoboken. A black Cadillac Escalade with possible New York plates fled the scene,” Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said in a statement.

“Any person with information on the crash please contact the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit or Hoboken Police Traffic Bureau. Investigators are analyzing pieces of the suspect vehicle and video footage at this time.”

Schillari added that the fatal accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old male, Zackhary Simmons, of Ramsey, and the search is being expanded to include large black SUVs such as a Yukon, Tahoe or Escalade and the vehicle in question is believed to have a New York registration.

Simmons was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health at 4:25 a.m. this morning, the sheriff said in an update on the situation this afternoon.
