A Bayonne man pulled a knife on a Walmart worker after shoplifting $390 worth of merchandise yesterday afternoon, police said.

Jayson R. Ruiz, 49, of Bayonne, was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Ruiz was taken into custody at about 1:39 p.m. from the area of East 22nd Street. Officers responded to Walmart, located at 500 Bayonne Crossing Way, on a report of a robbery involving a knife.

According to the victim, a store employee, while attempting to prevent Ruiz from exiting the store after being observed shoplifting $390, he brandished a folding knife and threatened the employee with it.

Ruiz then fled the scene but was apprehended by police near the 22nd Street Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station, authorities said.
