The North Bergen Police Department promoted one new captain, one new lieutenant, and one sergeant at a Township Hall ceremony on Wednesday.

These promotions reflect the professionalism, dedication, and leadership that define the North Bergen Police Department,” Mayor Nick Sacco said in a statement.
“Each of these officers has earned the trust of our community and the respect of their peers, and I am confident they will continue to serve our residents with integrity and distinction.”
The following officers were promoted in recognition of their service and commitment to public safety:
• Capt. Alex J. Barrios
A 14-year veteran of the North Bergen PD, Barrios has served in patrol, the detective bureau, and field operations, and currently commands the Community Relations Unit.
He is also a PTC-certified Police Instructor, Executive Logistics Officer with the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team, President of the Superior Officers Association, and a decorated officer with multiple departmental and regional awards.
• Lt. Edgar Mendez
Mendez joined the department in 2005 and has extensive experience in investigative and specialized units, including narcotics, detective bureau, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Task Force.
He also serves as deputy commander of the Hudson County Regional Crisis Negotiations Team and the department’s ABC liaison.
• Sgt, Samantha Sexton
A North Bergen native and Monmouth University graduate, Sexton has served in the detective bureau, street crimes, and patrol divisions.
She is an active PBA Executive Board member and has been recognized with multiple awards for her investigative work, including closing a 20-year-old cold case.
“These officers have demonstrated exceptional skill, commitment, and leadership throughout their careers,” added Public Safety Commissioner Allen Pascual.
“Their promotions strengthen our department and ensure that North Bergen residents continue to receive the highest level of public safety and service.”
Also in attendance were Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Claudia Rodriguez, and Anthony Vainieri; County Commissioner Bob Baselice (D-8); Weehawken Deputy Chief Jimmy White; Union City Police Capt. Archer Cuellar; Cliffside Park Police Chief Yakup Zoklu; and Regional SWAT Team Commander Carlos Clavijo, along with members of the North Bergen PD, township officials, and the officers’ families.
“Advancement within this department is earned through accountability, experience, and dedication,” noted North Bergen Police Chief Robert Farley.
“The promotions of Captain Barrios, Lieutenant Mendez, and Sergeant Sexton strengthen our ability to protect and serve the community, and I am confident they will carry out the responsibilities of their new ranks with the highest standards of professionalism.”
