“We’re proud to endorse James Solomon as Jersey City’s next Mayor. While McGreevey is selling out his campaign to the same Republican donors to Donald Trump’s campaign, Solomon is rejecting donations from powerful developers,” NJ Working Families Party State Director Antoinette Miles said in a statement.

“Jersey City families deserve a Mayor with a bold vision to make the city affordable for all, with the courage to stand up to Trump – and that candidate is James Solomon. He understands that working families are living paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford to wait for the promise of relief that never comes. We’re committed to partnering with James to build independent political power in a county that has for too long been dominated by broken machine party politics.”

The organization also said they were impressed with Solomon’s activism to end the county line system, championed by now U.S. Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ), rent protection measures for city tenants, and fighting to keep Liberty State Park open space – among other things.

In the June 10th primary for state Assembly in the 32nd Legislative District, the WFP backed Katie Brennan, who ended up being the top vote getter. She also had the backing of Solomon.

The group tends to endorse progressive challengers throughout the state, though has backed incumbents like Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Hoboken Mayor Ras Baraka, and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop dating back to 2021.

With Fulop opting to run for governor rather than seek a fourth term, Solomon and McGreevey are in a seven-person, non-partisan contest on November 4th to succeed him.

“The New Jersey Working Families Party has led the fight for a more progressive New Jersey, and I am so honored to earn their endorsement for Mayor of Jersey City,” Sololom added.

“Jersey City needs real leaders willing to name and blame the corruption that makes our city unaffordable —and we need fighters who are ready to take on the billionaire developers and corporations keeping costs high. I’m running to be that leader, and I’m proud to have the WFP by my side in this fight.”

The other mayoral candidates are Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2), Council President Joyce Watterman, former Board of Education President Mussab Ali, Police Officer Christina Freeman, and Kalki Jayne-Rose.
