A man shot another man in the pelvic region after he got into a dispute with another man over a woman in Weehawken last night, Mayor Richard Turner said.

The incident occurred yesterday around 6 p.m. near the intersection of Park Avenue and 45th Street and the mayor emphasized that this was not a random act of violence.

“They are well known to each other and both individuals are well known to police for various activities in the past. They were having a dispute over a woman, they both had weapons, and it escalated to violence,” Turner explained over the phone.

“Domestic violence is one of the biggest problems our local police department is faced with and this is another case and this just happened to escalate to the streets with guns. It’s impossible to deal with until it happens.”

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and is being treated at the Jersey City Medical Center, while the shooter fled in a vehicle with fraudulent license plates.

Therefore, the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, Turner noted.

  1. Why is Turner talking about this? Where is Jeff Welz or William Mclellan? This shooting took place two blocks from my home. In fact, I had just walked past there an hour earlier on my back from shopping at the Lidle. And the shooter is still at large. I don’t feel safe here. Mayor Turner explaining to the public how little the police can do to prevent this type of violence is not comforting. Weehawken police have a reputation among residents as being abusive, arrogant and incompetent. Try to call the department for any reason and your inquiry will be met with skepticism and a distinct unwillingness to help The police have targeted me personally for electronic and physical surveillance. I rarely leave my home without being watched. They have weaponized the Port Imperial security patrol. And I’m a sixty five year old retired school teacher! And I have attempted to address this with a patronizing, do nothing Mayor Turner. Drug dealing, shootings, robberies, etc. usually go unreported giving the impression that residents and visitors are safer than they are. All a person can say is what a shame.

  2. I heard the shooter was caught, but no confirmation. As for it being a domestic, pure BS and political spin. The “victim” has been a local problem for years, dealing drugs on that block for a decade and I can confirm that. I’ve been expecting this to happen for years, and surprised it took this long. Those buildings have been nothing more than a feeder system for local prisons. Its time to get the cops out of their cars and onto the sidewalks. Time to Mount cameras and enforce no loitering laws and bust these punks for anything you can. Not sure why we have to wait for school kid to get shot before something, anything, is done.
