In a letter to the editor, Hoboken Republican Committee Chair Pavel Sokolov explains why political violence must be condemned following the killing of right wing commentator Charlie Kirk.
Dear friends, fellow community members,
We are here today with a deep sense of sorrow and concern following the shooting of Charlie Kirk. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and everyone affected by this tragic event.
This is more than just an isolated incident; it’s a painful reminder that political disagreements must never, under any circumstances, escalate to violence.
The right to free speech is a cornerstone of our democracy. It is a value that we believe should be extended to every individual, regardless of their political beliefs. But for this right to truly exist, people must be able to speak without fearing for their physical safety.
There is simply no room for violence in a democratic society.
We, as a community, must unequivocally condemn all forms of political violence. Our shared responsibility is to commit to handling our differences through respectful dialogue and legitimate political processes.
As for our elected representatives, we look to you for leadership. We ask that you publicly reinforce the importance of protecting free speech and actively work to ensure the physical security of everyone in our community.
We need you to set the example, to show us that a commitment to dialogue and safety is paramount.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Charlie Kirk and his family. I’ll leave you with a powerful quote from Mr. Kirk himself: “If you believe in something, you need to have courage to fight for those ideas – not run away from them or try and silence them.”
Let us have the courage to fight for our ideas, not with fists or with bullets, but with the power of our words and the strength of our democratic ideals this November and beyond.
