Dear Editor,

I would like to thank Democrats from across Hudson, Essex, Union and Bergen counties for their support in this unprecedented election.

The COVID-19 crisis has had a profound impact on our communities, and its effect on the primary election was also significant.

But even though they were confronted with the need to cast their vote in new ways, the voters nonetheless made their voices heard and I thank them for their contribution to our democracy.

I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the people of the 8th District, which contains my hometown of West New York and so many other communities that I love.

Our district is New Jersey’s economic growth engine, from the progress being made in our biggest cities like Jersey City, Newark and Elizabeth to the strong neighborhoods and excellent local leaders in places like North Bergen, Union City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Bayonne, Belleville, Fairview, Guttenberg, Harrison, Kearny and East Newark.

I pledge to keep fighting in Congress for the values we all share, like expanding affordable health care coverage, reforming our broken immigration system, taking on the NRA and always standing up for our working families.

I am grateful to my many supporters in this election who I am proud to work with every day on important issues for our state, from Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Bob Menendez and Senator Cory Booker, to all of the elected officials and Democratic leaders from throughout the district who worked together as a team to achieve this tremendous victory.

I am also very thankful to the many outstanding labor unions and advocacy groups who stood with me, including over 15 of the most influential organizations in both New Jersey and nationally.

I’m proud to call myself a strong supporter of organized labor and I will always be there for my brothers and sisters in our unions.

With the primary election behind us, it’s time for all Democrats to come together to re-elect Senator Booker and restore true leadership to the White House by electing Joe Biden as our next President.

In addition to my work in Congress, I will now be fighting to support the Biden-Booker ticket here in New Jersey to make sure we do our part this November.

I ask all of the Democratic voters of the 8th District, those whose support I earned along with those who voted for other candidates, to join me in that urgent task.

We can only win when we are united and now is the time to work together as one Democratic Party.

Albio Sires
U.S. Representative (D-8th District)
