“Putting politics aside for a moment, Katie Brennan is a friend who I’ve worked alongside with for years on mandating affordable units for new development in JSQ,” Zuppa wrote on Instagram this morning.

“Yesterday we walked the Hilltop neighborhood and spoke to residents about their years’ worth of concerns about rising cost of living and increased property taxes without improvement in City services. Our message: time for change. Looking forward to delivering that change while I’m on the Council and Katie is in the Assembly.”

They both served together on the Journal Square Community Association and Brennan has attended several of Zuppa’s fundraisers since he announced his candidacy in October, so their friendship and mutual political support has been known among Jersey City politicos.

Nevertheless, Zuppa’s formal endorsement comes in a race where every vote is likely to make a big difference, as Brennan faces four other candidates alongside Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla – her running mate in the June 10th primary.

The Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) is backing Jennie Pu and Crystal Fonseca, while Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez and Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh are running on Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s “Democrats for Change” gubernatorial slate.

Early voting is now underway through Sunday and polling locations can be found here.
