“I’m excited for this opportunity after a successful 12-year tenure with the City of Jersey City, where I worked closely with each of our autonomous agencies and developed a deep understanding and appreciation for the critical work they do every day,” Metro told HCV this evening.

“I look forward to expanding upon the important work of the authority in delivering reliable services and supporting the city’s continued growth.”

Metro succeeds Richard Haytas, who was named the acting executive director last month after the board did not renew the contract of then-ED Jose “Joe” Cunha, as HCV first reported.

Thursdays meeting was scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, but didn’t get underway until about 4:20 p.m. due to flooding caused by the storm. Metro’s appointment was briefly discussed in executive session and went through unanimously (5-0).

“In approving resolution 28, the JCMUA has appointed a new executive director: John Metro,” MUA General Counsel Katie Mocco said after the measure was approved. There was no further public discourse on the matter.

Metro was named acting Jersey City Business Administrator in November 2020, as HCV first reported, and had his acting title removed in January 2022.

He also served as the chair of the now defunct Bayonne MUA between 2014 and 2016, with his new role beginning on November 12th.
