“Any support for our home team, to assist them in any way possible, is a great thing to do,” said Board of Commissioners Chair Anthony Vainieri (D-8), who placed the item on Thursday’s agenda.

He also stated that the home team deserves major backing from Jersey City, Hudson County, and New Jersey ahead of their big game.

Two of the county commissioners, Kenny Kopacz (D-1) and Anthony Romano (D-5), are St. Peter’s alumni.

As expected, they are both thrilled with the teams March Madness success, knocking off Kentucky and Murray State, who were ranked 2 and 7 in the tournament, respectively.

“As much as we’re celebrating one of the greatest moments in St. Peter’s history with the basketball team going to the Sweet 16, we also had one of greatest losses with the passing of Dr. Elnardo Webster and we know he’ll be with us on Friday,” Kopacz told HCV this morning.

“This is a great time for St. Peter’s, it really is, especially anyone whose played sports there. My sister is in the Hall of Fame, I played baseball, they’ve just done a wonderful job up to this point, credit to their coaches and athletic director.”

Romano, who also taught at St. Peter’s for several years, sung a similar tune.

“First and foremost, these inner city kids have achieved something that’s never been done. It’s a tribute to their coach, Shaheen Holloway, to put them in the right mindset not to be intimidated by these schools with big budgets and scholarship athletes,” he said.

“It’s exciting for the area and it’s just a good feeling at a time when there’s been so much negativity in the country. The St. Peter’s basketball team has brought a little ray of sunshine and happiness to us locally.”

St. Peter’s, just the third 15 seed to make it to the Sweet 16 in NCAA history, looks to keep their Cinderella story alive against the Boilermakers, ranked number 3, with the tipoff scheduled for 7:09 p.m. on Friday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Jersey City Police Department will provide the team with an escort to Philly at approximately 6 p.m. this evening.

Meanwhile, the Hudson County commissioners will convene tomorrow at 567 Pavonia Ave. at 4:30 p.m.
