“Happy and Proud Juneteenth! As a day of immense celebration, Juneteenth reminds every American that we are all free and equal in this country regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or gender,” Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, who was unable to attend the ceremony, said in a statement.

“Hudson County memorializes the African American community with today’s flag raising as we honor the plentiful contributions and excellence they have brought to Hudson County’s society and culture. As we celebrate Juneteenth this month, we renew our commitment to uplift and celebrate the African American community within Hudson County each and every day.”

Juneteenth is observed on June 19th throughout the United States as the day enslaved Americans in the South were finally given word of their freedom in 1865, signifying the full emancipation of every African American in the country.

The ceremony was led by Jenny Davis, Guy’s chief of staff, and Hudson County Board of Commissioners Chair Anthony Romano (D-5).

Citations were given to the following honorees from the Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration Inc: President and Board member Mofalc Olei Meinga, Ambassador, Trustee, and Board member Cheryl DB Murphy, Secretary and Board member Darryl Spence, Treasurer and Board member Charles Blue, U.S. Air Force E4 Senior Airman Kevin G. Hurt, Committee Member Lily Fleming, Erika Bermudez, NJOF NYC State Director Deborah Oguamah, and Honorary member Gordon Nesta Callender.
