“Hoboken Fire is easily the most dedicated fire department in the state,” Fire Chief Anton Peskens began in a statement.

“Our members have courage, heart, and compassion, and I encourage anyone who has ever thought about being a Hoboken firefighter and protecting their own community, to apply and explore what it takes to join our team and embark on this rewarding career.”

Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Hoboken, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. There is also a $35 application fee.

Those interested in joining the Hoboken Fire Department are encouraged to fill
out an application before September 3rd.

After the application process closes, eligible candidates will take the New Jersey Entry-Level Firefighter Examination. The firefighter exam is expected to be scheduled for late fall/early winter 2024.

Candidates who pass the firefighter exam and are certified in Hoboken will be required to pass the Physical Performance Test (PPT) and agree to a background investigation which may include medical screenings, psychiatric testing, and drug screenings.

Hoboken firefighters will receive competitive starting salaries, generous benefits packages including paid sick and vacation time, health insurance, and promotional opportunities.

The Hoboken Fire Department, founded in 1847, responds to over 5,000 emergencies a year, including fires, natural disasters, medical distress calls, water and other rescues, and more. HFD also participates in regional response initiatives including the New Jersey Regional Fireboat Task Force for marine emergencies, and the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) for technical rescues.

Additionally, the Hoboken Fire Prevention Bureau includes a fire marshal and fire inspector who enforce fire codes, educate the public about fire safety, engineer solutions to mitigate emergencies, and investigate the origins and causes of fires.
