Fulop still backing Biden: ‘One of the most successful presidents in modern history’

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democratic candidate for governor, says he is still backing President Joe Biden (D) for re-election despite calls for him to drop out of an anticipated November 5th rematch with former President Donald Trump (R).

“I just don’t think this press release is helpful…. The voters voted for him in a primary and he is the same person he was 3 weeks ago when you (and others) were praising him. A bad debate or Washington pundits commenting are not reasons to walk away from him,” Fulop wrote on X this morning.

“He is one of the most successful presidents in modern history + he deserves a second term. We should all be digging in and working harder on his behalf – not creating chaos[.]”

The mayor’s remarks came in response to U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11), who is seeking re-election in November and widely expected to run for governor in 2025, became the seventh Democratic House member to call for Biden to withdraw.

She is also the first member of the New Jersey congressional delegation to call for the sitting president to drop out.

“I know that President Biden and his team have been true public servants and have put the country and the best interests of democracy first and foremost in their considerations,” the congresswoman said in a statement.

“And because I know President Biden cares deeply about the future of our country, I am asking that he declare that he won’t run for reelection and will help lead us through a process toward a new nominee.”

Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020, has faced intense scrutiny, including questioning his mental fitness to serve at 81 years old, after a putrid performance against his Republican rival at a June 27th debate hosted by ABC.

Fulop, who announced his expected statewide run in April of last year, is currently in a field of four on the blue side of the aisle.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney are also declared Democratic candidates for the June 3rd, 2025 primary.
