Hoboken 1st Ward Councilman Mike DeFusco believes that Freeholder Anthony Romano’s mayoral announcement exhibited “hypocrisy” and a “level of entitlement” that should sound alarm bells for voters.

“Today we saw a Freeholder testing the waters with an announcement that sounded more like an exploratory committee than a legitimate bid for Mayor,” DeFusco said in a prepared statement sent this afternoon.
“He spoke about commitment, yet proposes to run for both offices at the same time, expecting the people to wait while he decides which suits him best. That’s not leadership, it’s duplicity and hypocrisy. Every resident of Hoboken should be offended by his level of entitlement.â€
Romano, who announced his mayoral candidacy at his Washington Street campaign headquarters at 10 a.m. this morning, said he and his staff would decide at a later date when Hudson County View asked if he planned on being on the November 7th ballot twice.
“We need a leader with an understanding of where we are, a vision for where we are going, and the dedication to get us there. I’m emboldened as ever to continue my campaign of speaking to as many residents as possible about the important issues at hand so we can eliminate the political divides of the past for a unified and progressive future.â€
DeFusco, an ally turned enemy of Mayor Dawn Zimmer, declared his quest for the mayor’s seat about a month ago.
Zimmer has of course since backed out of the race and endorsed Councilman-at-Large Ravi Bhalla, with Council President Jen Giattino also set to enter the contest this evening.
A spokesman for the Romano campaign declined to address DeFusco’s criticism.
