Citing ‘housing affordability crisis,’ Ramos will vote for Hoboken’s Garage B plan

Citing a “housing affordability crisis,” Hoboken 4th Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos, a candidate for mayor, says he will vote for the city’s Garage B plan at tomorrow’s meeting.

“Hoboken has a housing affordability crisis and we need to do much more to increase the supply of affordable and workforce housing, or else the middle class will continue to get pushed out of our community,” Ramos began in a statement.

“That’s why I’m so disappointed to see the planning board vote against the Garage B redevelopment plan, which would add much-needed housing near public transit that would be reserved for working class residents.”

The Hoboken Planning Board voted against the Garage B plan at a consistency hearing last night, deeming it incompatible with the Master Plan, as only HCV has reported.

Ramos, who voted in favor of the first reading of the ordinance on March 3rd, stated outright that he plans on voting yes again at tomorrow night’s council meeting where the measure is up for second and final reading.

“It’s been decades since Hoboken has taken bold action to build more affordable housing and that has to change now, which is why I will support the Garage B plan when it is voted on at this week’s City Council meeting,” he concluded.

2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, another candidate for mayor, wrote a letter to the editor that was published this afternoon explaining why the proposal is an example of when “politics outweighs planning.”

Council President Jim Doyle, who also serves on the planning board, 1st Ward Councilman Paul Presinzano, and Fisher voted no on first reading, but with Ramos doubling down on his affirmative vote, it would seem that the ordinance has a good chance of passing 5-3 again.

The Hoboken City Council convenes tomorrow evening at City Hall, 94 Washington St., at 7 p.m. and will stream live on their YouTube channel.

    • he’s been here his entire life and on council for years
      He’s a great counselor

Fisher got the city to spend over 10 million to protect her condo views and literally flipped the unit not long after the city gave away millions to buy a broken dock in front of her window

In any other city the FBI WOULD be investigating

      • Not true, but like so many of Hoboken’s old guard politicos and their minions truthfulness has never been something they are known to respect. They instead embrace lies and try to smear anyone who dares oppose their perceived entitlements.

Let us not allow them to drag Hoboken back to the corrupt days that many have worked hard to end

  1. Turning Hoboken into an ugly version of the worst of Jersey City with gigantic buildings jutting out all over the skyline is a disgrace. They’re fine with turning Hoboken into the Manhattan entrance to the Holland Tunnel.

Not surprised Ruben would embrace it though. He’s always been a regular big developer backer with the swirling bucks for pols entwined. It’s one of the top ways they pay themselves.

  2. Easy for Doyle who came here in the ICE AGE and probbaly paid 200,k for his 1 family home and Tiffany ( Karen) Fisher who enjoyed a 30 million dollar land swap to protect her multiple investment’s views dont care about middle class.
    They are PURE elitists
Voting no on schools, pools, affordable housing- then we also know Fisher’s voting record and whispering opinions on Bhalla, and the Black and Brown Directors selected by Bhalla….

    Do the math

  3. Ruben Ramos family was able to use their political connections to get a cut rate price for their two family home years ago worth millions today and has been able to leverage that to launch and maintain his political career.
