Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis and Superintendent of Schools John Niesz are mourning the loss of six-year-old girl Saniya Felton, a public school student killed in a fire on Avenue C last night.

“Last night our city suffered an earth-shattering tragedy, as one of our beautiful children was taken from us in a fast-moving fire. Six-year-old Saniya is now with the angels.
Every once in awhile, our community is rocked with heartbreaking news, however, this is when we are at our best,” Davis wrote in a Facebook post.
“I am asking that everyone in Bayonne, please pray for Saniya’s mom, brother, and all her family and friends as they try to hold up during this incredibly difficult time. Let’s be there for them and provide all the support we can. Rest in Peace sweet and beautiful Saniya.”
Felton died at the Bayonne Medical Center early this morning after sustained serious injuries in a blaze at 438 Avenue C that broke out late Sunday evening.
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating the incident and foul play is not suspected at this time.
In a letter addressed to the Bayonne community, Niesz provided some background on Felton and also indicated that counseling is available to students.
“A second grader at William Shemin Midtown Community School, Saniya touched the lives of many with her bright smile and gentle spirit, and her loss is deeply felt by all who knew her,” he wrote.
” … Please know that we have counselors available at William Shemin Midtown and Nicholas Oresko Schools is anyone need to speak to someone about this tragedy (Midtown – 201-858-5984; Oresko – 201-858-6281). Please join us in honoring young Saniya’s memory and supporting those who are grieving during this difficult time.”
