Daniel N. Ross, 23, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and escape, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

The charges came on Friday around 1:13 p.m. after he was being treated at the Bayonne Medical Center and officers were preparing to secure him into handcuffs and place a hospital gown on him for transport to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

As they attempted to do so, Ross punched one of the officers in the face and attempted to flee through the exit door. The other officer was able to immediately grab hold of Ross and prevent the escape.

According to authorities, Ross immediately began to fight both officers before being subdued and handcuffed. The first officer suffered an injury to his jaw, while the second officer suffered a hand injury as a result of the incident.

The day prior, Ross has been charged with shoplifting $37 worth of merchandise from ShopRite and was arrested at his home nearby, officials said.
