Bayonne officials broke ground yesterday on a piece of land along Chosin Few Way that is ultimately expected to bring Costco to Hudson County.

On the heels of announcing that industrial warehousing companies will be creating up to 2,700 jobs, the groundbreaking of a new Costco will create another 100 construction jobs and then hundreds of retail jobs for Bayonne residents when it opens, officials said.

“This is huge. A lot of people in Bayonne were skeptical that Costco was coming because on this land, nothing has materialized – until now. Today we’re here with the developer and Costco for the groundbreaking to show people that they’ll be coming here,” said Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis.

“Costco is one of the best companies in the United States to work for that is going to provide good jobs to our citizens.”

JMF Properties Founder Joseph M. Forgione was one of several representatives from the business community that worked with the city to persuade Costco to set up shop in the Peninsula City.

Asked whether it was an easy sale to convince Costco to open a location in Bayonne, Forgione said, “Costco goes through a very rigorous site section process, so for them to commit to Bayonne is huge. They expect and project to do very well here.”
