Outgoing Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia (D-33), who sits on the Assembly Transportation Committee, is applauding Congress for preventing a $50 million federal funding cut from NJ Transit.Â

“It is a true victory that Congress has decided against cutting $50 million from NJ Transit in the federal transportation funding bill, thanks to the hard work of our New Jersey delegation – Senators Menendez and Booker and Congressmen Sires and Pallone, who sat on the conference committee for this bill,” Garcia said in a statement.
“As a member of the Assembly Transportation Committee who represents Hoboken and Jersey City, in the highest-density and public transit-oriented areas of the state, I know losing that funding would have had a tremendously harmful effect not only on NJ Transit, but on the many commuters who rely on public transportation in our state.”
Garcia recently introduced three commuter-friendly bills in the Assembly: the FARE, TRANSIT and TRIP Act, respectively, to ensure certain discounted fare rates for seniors and students, more public meetings from NJ Transit before a fare hike and much more.
U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) said in a statement yesterday that an agreement was reached to “preserve the High Density States Program and remove a House-passed attachment that would have killed the program,” h/t NJ 101.5.
