The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating a Jersey City incident where a man who shot at police as killed, according to sources familiar with the situation.

A civilian sustained fatal injuries at approximately 1:23 p.m. Friday afternoon on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, according to the AG’s office. His identity and the identities of the officers involved are not being released at this time.
A 2019 law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
It also requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
The AG’s Office did not release any further information, but according to sources familiar with the situation, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the suspect open fire on police and was badly injured when they returned fire.
