A “surge in scams” has been targeting recipients of Hudson County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) benefits in March, an official confirmed today.

“Hudson County has seen a surge in scams targeting SNAP and WFNJ benefit recipients at the point of sale. County staff are working to ensure no family goes hungry,” began County spokesman Mark Cygan said in an email following an inquiry for HCV.
He further stated that the the Hudson County Department of Family Services and Reintegration, along with the Department of Aging and Veterans Affairs, have delivered food to the families affected by the scams and will continue to do so.
Additionally, Cygan said that the “point of sale” element he referenced was scammers have placed skimming machines on sale devices so that the debit cards SNAP recipients utilize are compromised.
“We are working with our partners in state and local law enforcement to identify the location of these thefts. Additionally, the Hudson County Law Department, via its Office of Consumer Affairs, will investigate these thefts and will be in contact with state law enforcement officials to provide monetary relief to victims,” he concluded.
He also noted that Hudson County has approximately 53,000 SNAP recipients and the county has identified 782 residents who have been impacted since the beginning of the month.
Back in October, County Executive Craig Guy announced that he was bracing for cuts to the SNAP program from the federal government, that included partnering with local organizations such as Hunger Free Unity in the Community, the Coalition for Food and Health Equity, and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
