Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis will resign on January 1st, 2026 to be sworn in as the next Hudson County sheriff, suggesting Public Safety Director Robert Kubert to take his place in the interim ahead of the May 12th mayoral race in the Peninsula City.

“Inasmuch as I want to ensure that we have smooth transition from the current mayoral administration to the interim mayoral administration … I believe that everybody’s best interests would be best served by the Municipal Council moving to name an interim Mayor (with an effective date of January 1, 2026) at the December 17, 2025 Municipal Council Meeting,” Davis wrote in a November 24th letter that made yesterday’s caucus agenda.
“Additionally, although I have no say in the matter whatsoever, it is my recommendation that the current Director of Public Safety, Robert Kubert, be named as the individual who will serve my unexpired term (from January 1 through June 30, 2026).”
Kubert, a former police chief, has been the public safety director for the duration of Davis’ tenure as the Peninsula City mayor, which began on July 1st, 2014.
Davis ran with the backing of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) to unseat Sheriff Frank Schillari in the June 10th primary and easily won the November 4th general election against Republican nominee Elvis Alvarez.
While there is a scenario where a special election could have been called prior to the scheduled May 12th non-partisan race, as only HCV reported, the Bayonne municipal government appears poised to forego that scenario.
Thus far, Councilman at-Large Loyad Booker, former Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski, and local developer Lance Lucarelli have filed to run for mayor next spring.
