Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democratic candidate for mayor, is running two state Assembly candidates in the 35th Legislative District ahead of a screening for a vacant state Senate seat.

“This week, our campaign continues to prove the importance of elevating leaders across the state who are putting New Jersey’s communities first,” Fulop said in a statement.
“These candidates represent the change we need. Romi and Christina are individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to their communities and view challenges as opportunities to craft real solutions for people in need.”
Romi Herrera, who was a Garfield councilman who lost a re-election bid last year, immigrated to the United States in 1993, living in the city of Paterson until 2005, when he moved to Garfield.
Since then, he has been an involved community leader, intimately understanding the problems and needs of Garfield.
Herrera is also the founder and president of Garfield United, an organization focused on empowering children and their families and improving their lives within the community.
He currently serves as a member of the Bergen County Latino American Advisory Board, the City of Garfield Planning Board, and as Vice President of the Garfield Democratic County Committee.
His running mate will be Christina Khalil, who ran for U.S. Senate as the Green Party candidate last year, dedicated much of her time to volunteering with community organizations.
Those include the Bergen County LGBTQ+ Alliance (BCLA), where she supports critical initiatives.
While pursuing her Master’s of Social Work degree from Ramapo College, she worked on the front lines during the height of the pandemic at a medical detox facility.
Those moves are notable since U.S. Rep. Nellie Pou’s (D-9) prior state Senate seat is vacant and the Passaic County Democratic Committee will screen candidates tomorrow.
Assemblymen Benjie Wimberly and Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter are all but certain to seek the seat, which would them leave a vacant Assembly seat and another candidate screening.
With his backing of Herrera and Khalil, Fulop is now running 36 Assembly candidates across the state, along with four county commissioner candidates.

No Ravi Bhalla? When do we see him announced? The poor brown man is forever the victim – and never the criminal.
Besides being the color of green because you are filled with envy, Emily, you are also the color of red, for racism.
