HCCC, NJCU to receive over $8M each as part of COVID-19 emergency funding

Hudson County Community College and New Jersey City University will be the biggest local beneficiaries of the U.S. Department of Education’s COVID-19 emergency funding, with both slated to receive over $8 million.

The federal funding comes from the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which allocated approximately $14 billion to help colleges and universities across the country mitigate their financial losses and help students and their families struggling because of the economic downturn caused by the outbreak.

HCCC will receive $8,467,661, with NJCU right behind them with $8,337,070.

“Now more than ever, students and their families across New Jersey need our help weathering the economic storm caused by COVID-19,” U.S. Senator Bob Menendez said in a statement.

“This funding will ensure students receive the assistance they need and that our colleges and universities can continue operating during this crisis. As Congress works on another stimulus package, I’ll continue fighting for the resources our students and institutions need to fully recover from these troubling times.”

New Jersey’s public two- and four-year colleges and universities were awarded a combined $238,113,748 after Menendez led the call for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to expedite the delivery of the emergency COVID-19 funding.

Other institutions of higher learning receiving funding include private four-year colleges, technical and trade schools, and seminaries.

“I fought alongside Senator Menendez to ensure the economic hardships being experienced by students and our institutions of higher education are addressed so they receive the help they desperately need. This federal funding is a critical first step in supporting New Jersey’s colleges and universities, students, staff, faculty, and researchers battling this ongoing crisis.”

The nine other Hudson County learning institutions that have secured federal funding are as follows:

• Saint Peter’s University – $3,914,585

• Stevens Institute of Technology – $3,121,706

• Eastern International College – $1,016,203

• PC Age – $782,767

• National Career Institute – $497,128

• Robert Fiance Beauty Schools – $304,898

• Branford Hall Career Institute – $201,705

• Total Image Beauty Academy – $178,161

• Garden State Science and Technology Institute – $134,873
