“I am writing to inform everyone about the devastating accident that occurred at Target. According to initial reports, a dump truck descending 71st Street hill lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck a tractor-trailer,” North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco wrote on social media.
“The force of the collision caused both vehicles to crash into the Target store. We have confirmed six injuries, with one being severe. Additional updates will be provided as new information arises. Please offer your support and prayers to the injured individuals.”
About an hour ago, the North Bergen Police Department warned drivers of significant traffic delays due to the crash and advised everyone to avoid the area if possible.
“Tonnelle Avenue is closed in both directions between 70th Street and 76th Street due to a motor vehicle accident involving a truck that has collided with the Target Store. Significant traffic delays are anticipated, and we advise the public to avoid the area and utilize alternate routes,” they wrote on Facebook.
The department also indicated that the incident is already under investigation, with multiple first responders on the scene.
“Our thoughts are with those who were affected by the events that occurred this afternoon. We are committed to supporting the injured individuals and their families while working to understand what happened,” Sacco said at a press conference this evening.
“I also want to commend our emergency responders and responders from surrounding municipalities for their swift action and dedication to ensuring everyone’s safety.”
As of this moment, no charges are being brought at this time as the incident, according to the North Bergen PD. They also said that two people sustained serious injuries, two sustained moderate injuries, and two sustained minor injuries.
In addition to their presence, and North Bergen EMS, the scene drew a response from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, the West New York Police Department and EMS, Union City EMS, Weehawken EMS, and the Jersey City Medical Center.
