17 people have applied to fill Tom Cotter’s 1st Ward council seat in Bayonne, a City Hall official told Hudson County View.

As of this morning, the city council has received 17 resumes and the council has 30 days to appoint Cotter’s replacement, Deputy City Clerk Madelene Medina said in an email.

HCV first reported last week that Cotter would be resigning as a councilman to run the city’s Department of Public Works. The council approved his $117,000 salary for the position last week.

While the vacant spot has warranted a lot of interest, sources say that Neil Carroll III, the grandson of the prolific former Bayonne freeholder and the nephew of ex-Mayor Mark Smith, is the leading candidate for the job.

The city council is tentatively expected to appoint Cotter’s successor at a special meeting next week.

  1. The council (including Cotter) raised the salary for that position about two months ago, right before Davis asked him to step down and take the job. Davis should be paying for the special election out of his campaign funds. No mention of what happened to the old DPW chief, or who applied for the job? Such disappointing ‘journalism’, as usual. SMH.

    • It’s been mentioned previously that the former DPW director is taking “a reduced role,” his new title and salary haven’t been made public yet. I requested the full list of people who applied but the clerk’s office said they didn’t have that information.
