Jersey City Ward E Councilman James Solomon, a potential mayoral candidate, is applauding Vice President Kamala Harris (D) for calling for a crackdown on rent-setting algorithms after the city council called on the state legislature to ban them in June.

“Some corporate landlords collude with each other to set artificially high rental prices, often using algorithms and price-fixing software to do it: it’s anti-competitive and it drives up costs,” Harris said at a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina today.

“I will fight for a law that cracks down on these practices,” she said to applause.

Solomon, the primary sponsor of the council resolution who also authored an editorial with 32BJ SEIU New Jersey State Director Ana Maria Hill, expressed excitement over Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, weighing in on the matter.

“Vice President Kamala Harris is right: Corporate landlords use price-fixing software, like RealPage, to illegally collude on raising rents,” the downtown councilman began in a statement.

“ … On a separate note, I’m ecstatic that Vice President Harris understands that affordable housing is central to building an opportunity economy. In Jersey City, I’ve fought every day to make sure corporate landlords are held accountable and tenants are protected – and as we chart a new way forward by electing Kamala Harris President, I promise you I will keep up my end of the fight and champion housing for all in Jersey City.”

Solomon and Ward F Councilman Frank “Educational” Gilmore said today that they would address the ongoing situation between the tenants at Portside Towers and their landlord, Equity Residential, next week.

The matter is currently being litigated in Hudson County Superior Court, as well as federal court.

Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-19), the running mate of Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, told Gothamist last month that she is crafting legislation to ban rent-setting algorithms.

“As the costs of housing, especially in the rental market, continue to increase, the last thing working families need is to be victims of a rent-setting scheme,” she said in a statement at the time.
