“Sampson is pleased to announce he secured $1.25 million funding for the Bayonne School District, and would like to thank Kenny Kopacz, deputy Bayonne superintendent and Hudson County commissioner for his friendship, leadership and commitment to the Bayonne school system,” Michele Iacono, Sampson’s chief of staff, told HCV.

Sampson’s budget resolution was part of the state spending plan signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) just after midnight on Tuesday, July 1st.

The state Senate approved the $58.8 billion budget bill in a 26-13 vote, while the Assembly approved it in a 52-27 vote with one abstention.

On Wednesday, state Senator Raj Mukherji (D-32) went public about his budget resolution to restore $4 million to the Jersey City BOE, while state Senator Angela McKnight (D-31) celebrated the funding allocations for both the Bayonne and Jersey City schools yesterday, both as HCV first reported.

Additionally, Mukherji and Sampson have both introduced corresponding bills this session to offset some of the burden on local property taxpayers by revamping Jersey City’s payroll tax.

“Any ordinance adopted pursuant to this article shall: Require each employer to report his payroll for the preceding calendar quarter to an officer of the municipality designated therein to receive the same and to collect the tax together with such other related information as shall be required by the ordinance and regulations issued pursuant thereto,” Bill A-5371/S-4219 says.

The state legislation would mandate that the report and payment of the tax for the prior quarter be on the last day of April, July, October, and January, respectively.
