Rep. Menendez on Biden: ‘We have a nominee today with a proven track record’

U.S. Rep. Menendez (D-8) is indicating that he will continue supporting President Joe Biden’s re-election bid, stating “we have a nominee today with a proven track record that any Democrat would be proud to run on.”

“This has been one of the most productive presidencies in American history. The Biden Administration has delivered historic investments in our infrastructure – including the Gateway Program – built back our economy, taken presidential action on gun violence prevention and environmental protections, and stood tall for working families and unions across the country,” Menendez said in a statement.

“This stands in direct contrast to what we witnessed under the Trump presidency and the trauma he caused for so many of our communities. We need to remember those four years and what another Trump presidency would mean for all of us. He has made clear in his agenda and through Project 2025 that this harm to our democracy will only get worse if he is elected. We have a nominee today with a proven track record that any Democrat would be proud to run on.”

He continued that he is aware of the concerns expressed about Biden since last month’s disastrous ABC debate with former President Donald Trump (R), urging the Delaware native to be transparent with the American people going forward, but reiterated he’s a far superior choice to his predecessor.

While not quite as enthusiastic, Menendez is on the same page as Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a political rival who wrote this morning that Biden is “one of the most successful presidents in modern history,” as HCV first reported.

Fulop was a key holdout from the Hudson County Democratic Organization in endorsing Menendez for a second term in the June 4th primary when he was challenged by Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

Menendez prevailed by about 15 points, largely on the strength of North Hudson, and is a shoo-in for re-election in the navy blue 8th District, therefore, it is not particularly shocking that he doesn’t mind if Biden is on top of the ticket on November 5th.

For the time being, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11), who is also seeking re-election in the fall, is the only member of the New Jersey congressional delegation calling for Biden to step aside.

She is widely considered to announced a bid for governor afterwards and Fulop’s remarks on Biden came in response to hers.

U.S. Reps. Donald Norcross (D-1), Bill Pascrell (D-9), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12) have also come out in support of Biden, with U.S. Rep. Andy Kim (D-3), the Democratic nominee for Senate, expressing reservations without taking a firm stance either way.

  1. Never more true that it’s who you know that counts. America is becoming like how Hudson county always was. Rockin’ Roberto will be home free before the ink on the divorce papers is dry.

  2. Biden should absolutely be the nominee… he’s not too old and clearly not senile. No, he should 100% stay in the race. For the good of the country Biden needs to stay in the race.
