A Hoboken man was arrested after shoving, choking and spitting at cops during a scuffle near 1st and Harrison Streets early this morning, police said.Â
Luis Rivera, 51, of Hoboken, was charged with four counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, throwing bodily fluid, obstruction and bail jumping, according to Det. Lt. Edgardo Cruz.
Officers Tyler Soto and Michael Straten were dispatched to the area of 1st and Harrison Streets on a report of a suspicious person, authorities said.
The officers arrived to find a man fitting the description walking towards their vehicle. As the officers exited to speak with the defendant, he became irate and began to walk away, officials said.
Soto ordered him to stop, which he ignored, and shoved the officer. As Soto attempted to place him under arrest, Rivera poured a can of soda over him. At this time, a struggle ensued and the defendant grabbed Straten by the head and neck in an attempt to choke him, police said.
The officers were able to gain control of the defendant as they fell to the ground. Straten sustained an abrasion to his elbow, while Officers Flores and Milne, who assisted with the arrest, suffered minor cuts, authorities said.
As the cops began to transport Rivera, he turned towards Milne and spit on him. Despite the physical confrontation, all officers were able to continue their tour of duty, officials said.
According to authorities, Rivera’s charges were placed on a warrant and he was later remanded to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
